Employment
Working and going to college is a common experience for a large number of people in our society and with the right planning this outcome can be the same for people with intellectual or other developmental disabilities. Post secondary education initiatives offer a unique opportunity to guide people toward paid employment, while they are continuing their education.
The process of assisting people with intellectual disabilities to find meaningful jobs involves many factors: self and career awareness and development; person centered planning to discover interests, talents and support needs; skill and accommodation assessments; financial counseling to manage Social Security benefits; business networking, sales and negotiation; and lots of good customer service and follow along support to the youth and employers. In this section, you will find tools to assist professionals tasked with job development and placement of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Although finding a job is a very individualized process, these materials are intended to guide professionals through the steps and offer structure.
